The Mailbox: Placemaking

Lighting the public’s imagination through a unique onsite installation

A creative and compelling placemaking intervention to engage consumers during major redevelopment work.

The redevelopment of the Mailbox building in Birmingham sought to create a modern premium shopping destination. During the construction process, the client was keen to communicate that they were still operating and trading. Holmes Wood were briefed to create a hoarding design that would redirect visitors to a secondary entrance while the work was ongoing. Challenging the brief, we proposed an alternative solution, designing and building a six-metre high desk-lamp, complete with plug socket, to highlight the new space. This unique installation generated huge public interest and social media activity, creating a new city landmark and literally illuminating the new site entrance. Initially conceived as a temporary solution, the iconic intervention has become a permanent part of the landscape.
