King's Cross, Coal Drops Yard

Designing an iconic public space

An elegant wayfinding scheme that creates a harmonious backdrop to diverse activities and experiences at this popular new destination.

At the heart of the King’s Cross redevelopment, Coal Drops Yard required an independent wayfinding scheme to reinforce its identity as a vibrant and historically significant destination. The design solution had to balance the visibility of the new offer with distinctive architectural features, while clearly signalling integrated access facilities.

Through the use of elegant totems and a subtle colour palette, our sign system complements the Victorian brick viaducts and other historic features. We also gave each level a name rather than a number, further leveraging the site’s heritage and enhancing the overall sense of place. The end result is a refined wayfinding scheme that enables clear navigation, while reflecting the materiality and finish of the surrounding environment.
