'The House', sculptures by Butch Gordon

Butch Gordon joined Holmes Wood as a Senior Graphic Designer in 2022. He has worked on a number of key projects to date, including Sadler’s Wells East and 40 Leadenhall, combining his graphics expertise with a deep understanding of the structural and material aspects of signage.

Butch trained in Visual Arts at Nene College Northampton, specialising in sculpture, and previously worked as a wayfinding specialist for a mid-sized architecture studio. He continues to draw on countless design and art influences in his work, from mother nature to Brutalism, Heath Robinson to Futura 2000 and Giacometti.

Alongside my graphic design work, I’ve always had an urge to make art. In fact, I’ve been creating things ever since I was a teenager, working in a number of styles and media, from light-based pieces to large painted murals and tiny sculptures.

For the last decade or so, ‘The House’ has been a recurring symbol in my work, occasionally lurking in the background but more often featuring as a central motif. Quick to reproduce, bold and instantly recognisable, ‘The House’ is essentially a picture version of my signature.

My work is multidisciplinary, utilising urban detritus and bricolage techniques to produce raw and genuine pieces, true to their environment. I select my media depending on the theme I’m looking to explore. For example, when depicted through traditional hip-hop graffiti, ‘The House’ speaks of identity and the secret life of the individual in the city. Using three-dimensional layering, ‘The House’ references the continuous growth and redevelopment of our towns and cities. And placed high on stilts it represents the environmental challenges, referencing the need for elevation above rising sea levels.

If you’re lucky, you might spot ‘The House’ in my work in unexpected locations around the UK. And until April 2023, it can be seen as part of Gallery 32’s Winter Sculpture Park, an annual exhibition of contemporary sculpture and public art in Bexley, Greater London.
